It is generally assumed that hard-working, sweaty country boys are tougher and stronger than city boys. As old Sportin’ Life said, “It ain’t necessarily so.” This year’s opening day video of Kirkpinar opens with some horseplay among members of a team of city boys from Istanbul (population 10.4 million). These guys all have physiques that would impress any gym rat, and later when filmed in combat they prove that none of it is “show muscle.” We did not notice a single one that team lose his match.

This video contains over thirty matches, and because it is Day One all are in their mid-twenties or younger. That means they are fast, ripped, aggressive, still raw and willing to take chances which the older fighters (whose action does not begin until the second day) usually avoid. They are comparable to our most rugged high school and college wrestlers. They are all there to have fun – until they march into the tall grass and start competing, when everything gets very serious.
