The tiny mountain village of Kurtdeleri (“Valley of the Wolves”) whose big stadium honors the memory of a famous champion native son. The only sleeping accommodation for wrestlers is the crowded (but carpeted) floor of the local mosque. Wrestlers arrive in great number, and a sweltering sun cannot slow their pace as they clash on the meadow. Local fighters face challengers from all over Turkey. In one mismatch the big guy slammed his opponent so hard we thought he’d broken his back, but these guys can really take punishment. Scores of brutal matches and bulging muscles, but no final round is shown: the afternoon heat finally toppled the cameramen!
